Have you been around an 18-month-old or 2-year-old lately?
Have you noticed their communication? Are you having lengthy, meaningful conversations?
It’s highly unlikely! (Although some rare verbally advanced babes can.)
At some age, only babble comes out of their mouths trying to form words.
Have you watched them hold an object to their ears like we do phones?
Babble mimics the behavior of every adult their young lives has watched. Using sounds as word substitutes, their adorable selves speak in an unknown language to carry out their pretend conversations.

As children mature, they form simple beginning word sounds, and later, they produce longer, recognizable words. Simple words. Some only their parents understand.
What did she say???
As babies become toddlers, wanting desperately to understand, I’ve said that a lot.
I know they are trying to communicate something, but I just can’t figure it out by the vowels and consonants that tumble out. I glance over at Mom and Dad for understanding. Many times, they don’t know either. But, often they have learned their child’s unrecognizable language by familiarity.
Communication is a pathway. A journey. In time, we will understand every word. In the meantime, they may never communicate all they want to. Frustration for both parties can result. We want to understand, and they want us to understand.
Doesn’t your heart just go out to them?
They want us to understand and we want to, but at this stage, it doesn’t always happen!
This week, I was thinking about our communications with God.
My theory is … we may as well talk to him about everything and anything because, I believe, he knows what’s in our hearts. He can understand our groans, yearnings, and our attempts to communicate.
We may often sound like two-year-olds, desperately trying to communicate and understand things our childish hearts and minds don’t fully comprehend. Because the large view picture is unclear to us. Some of our thoughts may seem like semi-senseless babbles. The vowels and consonants don’t make sense: from heaven, in light of eternity, in God’s perfection.
Here is the best part …
God looks at us with the fondness and love of a parent!
I imagine him saying, “Isn’t she adorable?
She’s trying so hard to tell me from her limited knowledge!”
“But I understand her heart/thoughts!”
If anyone asked him, “What did she say?” He would translate our exact intentions! As our father, he would be the only one who understands. He would not cast aside or mis-align any of it.
He welcomes, accepts, and loves every effort we make to communicate. Even when we don’t know the right words or mix up the sounds. When we can’t figure out how to say it right!
Like a Mom or Dad trying to understand their toddler…wanting with their whole hearts to communicate. For a new milestone reached: reciprocal conversations. They listen, yearning to broaden their relationship with their growing child. They listen to years of babble to help their child grow into meaningful conversations.
I’m convinced, he bends his ear low to hear our murmurs. Listens intently and revels in his child seeking to communicate with Him. Even if our limited knowledge makes our words sound like babbles. I image his loving eyes understand our attempts, just like an earthly parent.
Have you heard him tell you lately …
“You’re adorable!”
In his eyes, you ARE!!
Keep communicating with your Heavenly Father.
He adores you.
Tell him everything, he can handle whatever you say and however you communicate!
He’ll know exactly what you mean!
