Music. The Universal Language.

Music speaks in every season, stage, and mood. A wide range of genres fill my iTunes and Pandora station.

It is clear to me, music was created by God. Listen to the birds sing, the brooks babble, the ocean roar, the whales communicate, etc. In the Old Testament of the Bible, musicians were part of worship. The Psalms encourage us to sing joyfully to God.

I have known, since my young years, music speaks to me in deep places. I’ve surmised, it speaks to my soul by God’s design. What stuns me, is it speaks to God too! Not only did He design it, but He enjoys it, in worship, in private, in nature, whenever!

I say this with a bit of presumption, but …

If you had created the world, would you have made creations able to sing,

if it did not bring you joy?

(I love to think and meditate on questions like this.)

Sometime, this year, this verse jumped out at me…

Mark 14

The Lord’s Supper (Last Supper)

22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant which is poured out for many. 25 “Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Do you see it?

After the last supper, before leaving for the garden … Jesus sang a song with his disciples!!!

Escaped Me

In Matthew and Mark’s account of the last supper …. when they finished, before going to the Mount of Olives (Garden of Gethsemane) …. it says, “they sang a hymn together”!

I love the thought of Jesus singing on earth!

It sends chills and goosebumps all over me. It melts my heart to wonder what His voice sounds like. I have considered what his speaking voice sounded like,  never His singing voice! I imagine, it is beyond soothing and can heal the deepest hurts! Or perhaps, it is off-key and not at all humanly appealing, but completely sounds like perfect love. Like a sound you can not forget or ignore. I perceive it’s pitch, tenor, and tone sound like home. Ahhhhh, I want to hear that!!

I, also, love the thought of this being his last hours on earth. Before even praying to God about the situation he faced, He sang … possibly, to remind himself to worship God in His darkest hours.

Maybe, also, to minister to His and his disciples’ spirits… which were about to be crushed!

He, who created music, knew the power of song and

used it to minister to Himself and His beloved disciples.

He blessed humankind to make countless types of music, secular and sacred alike, to minister and speak to souls. What a generous, creative, and loving act!

I LOVE it!!! I can’t seem to get over it!!

Selah! (Pause & Ponder)
