“WOW”

His little 20-month-legs hoisted him up onto the ottoman, at the front window; a newly acquired skill. I pulled up the blinds, so he could see out. He looked, at first, noticing cars. Then, his head tilted downward, peering below the windowsill. His eyes got big and his deep breath was audible, he gasped,

“WOWWWWW…… FLOWWWW-ERS!!!”

He caught his first glimpse of the bloomed hedge row; bright pink/red azaleas. He stared quite a while, for a wee-one, letting out a few more “Wow”, “Woweeee” and “Red”.

His expressions have reverberated in my thoughts. He was awe-struck. I wish my camera had been ready. I’m not as adept, as my younger earthlings, at capturing these things. But, the video is vivid in my head!! He was seeing a “first” with major impact; overwhelming his little heart and mind. Beautifully spontaneous! His smile, his emphasis, his joy…. it was contagious. My eyes lightened and my smile broadened following his. His discovery prompted me to appreciate what hurriedness misses.

It made me think …

Who created beauty from nothing? Who splashed them with brilliance? Who rebirths them every spring? Who did God place on earth to enjoy their beauty? What is my response? How often do I NOT see? Is my life a trail of similar moments? Do I haphazardly treat the wondrous as ordinary?

Tragically, in many “scheduled to-do list” days, I do beyond-my-fair-share of passing by God’s impressive wonders: distracted by finishing a list before day’s end.

How is it possible we miss the wondrous?

They light up the sky. Flow down the river. Reveal themselves in microscope and telescope. Color our world. Scamper through woods. Grow on vines. Shade us. Pulsate eardrums. Touch weariness. Burst taste buds. Chill spines. Hug necks. Kiss faces. Fill homes. Hold hearts. Yet, we still miss them.

Psalm 136 was an ancient song sung in Solomon’s Temple by the Jewish people. It declares, Jehovah God, the God of the Bible, is the “Unrivaled Wonder Worker”. (Charles H. Spurgeon’s Treasury of David)

“To Him who alone does great wonders, For His loving kindness is everlasting.” Psalms 136:4

The Wonder Worker

Elaine Translation: God is the ONLY one who does wonders. He is loving and kind, and will be forever.

He does His wonders, to get our attention, amaze us, enrich us and remind us of Himself. He desires to put “wonder” in us.

Consider these words penned by G.K. Chesterton:

It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun: and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon.

It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them.

It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.

The repetition in Nature may not be a mere recurrence; it may be a theatrical encore.

God’s creations are certainly theatrical and wonderful! They turn our heads and capture our attentions, when we allow it. Before every theater production, there is a set-build; where the stage is built and dressed to set the backdrop for the scenes and characters, to give the story context and a visual. We live in a 3-D theater of God’s design and execution: it’s the backdrop to draw us into His story. And perhaps, that is precisely the purpose. Wonders point us to the Wonder Worker.

It’s “wonder-full” to have my littlest man with me every week. His “firsts” and magnificent expressions keep my wonder-meter on high.

I recommend lingering with a child or becoming one, again, for a few moments and marvel at the wonder around you.

Admire the “Wonder Worker” for a moment.

Your eyes will lighten and smile broaden.

You may even find yourself singing a song.

Have you noted any wonders, lately? What fills your wonder-meter?

  5. I see the light and wonder in my 5 year old grandson who, after VBS, told me that he asked Jesus into his heart, and “Jesus hopped in!” So grateful to be a grandma coaching, rooting and praying on the sidelines! And I sing “Jesus Loves Me” for all to hear!
