Small Things

It’s a small thing, in the grand scheme.

It’s a small thing, and a lavish thing.

It’s a small thing, I could survive without, but wonder, if I’d thrive.

It’s a small thing, yet, bolsters my “emotional health”. (*wink*)

Introducing the small thing, that adds great things to my life …

“My monthly shampoo, scalp scrub, compliments of my hair stylist!”

Shout out to Susan, Brooke, Becca, Janice and others who came before, that added to this revelation.

The Experience

I recline, shut out the world, close my eyes and soak up the suds. As a young mom, those seconds were so rare and heavenly, I’m sure they ballooned my affection. Its’ always felt luxurious, regal, pampering, “queen-like”, extravagant to get a shampoo. I can’t quite explain it… I have seen my fair share of third world photos; traveling to a few of those countries. Perhaps, in contrast to those images, the shampoo bowl takes on so much significance.

Somewhere along the way, I realized this small ritual was more than a cleansing technique. I informed my husband, “If I can get my head shampooed every month, I will save you a ton in therapy bills.” There is just something about it: invigorating, refreshing, awakening, from head to toe relaxing … never long enough, or hard enough. (I like scrubbed … although, I realize that is not proper technique.)

It’s wonderful.

Small Thing Wisdom

I know, it seems a ridiculous thing to mention, but little things can hold great significance.

“For the person for whom small things do not exist, the great is not great.”

Jose Ortega Gasset

“Even the largest avalanche is triggered by small things.”

Vernor Vinge

“It is the small things in life which count; it is the inconsequential leak which empties the biggest reservoir.”

Charles Comiskey

“Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.”

Mother Teresa

Small Things Matter

They add up to big things. Size has no bearing on importance. Think about cells and DNA; they are microscopic, but they form us. No DNA, no us! Flower centers, nectar, tiny; it feeds bees, hummingbirds, etc.. In turn, they pollinate causing whole worlds of growth. What about “a little white lie”; it can become as big as a mountain, devastate and collapse relationships. To some, a tiny drop of oil or pill restores health.

God References “Small Things”

He says, “small things” define us.

He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.   Luke 16:10

God doesn’t dismiss small things and neither should we. We all know small things can cause us to distrust someone; a word ill-spoken, or a suspicious innuendo. Small things make us love someone; kind words, simple gestures, thoughtful actions, faithful intentions. Small things comprise beauty; a field of wildflowers. Or, can cause destruction; a single plane toppling a 110 story skyscraper.

Give small things their due and be mindful of their far-reaching effects.

I hope, you have a small thing that makes your heart sing;

“little” can conquer mountains (Luke 17:20) ….

which is how I feel after my rendezvous at the shampoo bowl!

Tell us about your “small thing”.

  1. I am enjoying your blogs!! Isn’t it true how words or actions can either uplift you or bring you down. I would much rather be the person uplifting others. God Bless!!
