It hardly seems right to talk about anything else today!
It is THE topic of the day all over the world.
I don’t really want to talk about it!

Politics are part of our world and thus life, but I don’t like to focus there. If I do, boy do I have to check myself. It can overtake every spiritual aspiration: things get twisted and contorted for me. It’s so easy to see sides and divides and “they” and “them”, as well as “we” and “us”. I can feel piously “right” and point out all the “wrongs”. I can also feel anxious and entitled and “doomsday” and helpless. If I’m aligning my heart to Christ’s and focusing on God … that’s not the place I want to go! It happens in a flash!!
I hope I am the only one!
It is an Election Day in the USA. Votes will be counted, leaders will be decided for the next four years.
If I’m honest, I don’t trust any system designed by man. It’s flawed from the start. The systems change constantly with all kinds of agenda attachments, personal props and verbiage no one can clearly explain. I don’t even trust the counting of the votes.
Perfection left us at Eden (the Garden)!
I want to encourage all of us today. No matter the outcome, God’s got us! From the beginning of time till this very day, He has never left His throne. He will not abandon His children now. It doesn’t mean what you or I determine is “right” or “best” will be the outcome. God doesn’t need it to be!
Do you ever think your neighbor, friend, acquaintance, or co-worker may have the exact opposite opinion of you: what you see as victory, they see as defeat and vice versa. If we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, and we are, wouldn’t we be just as concerned for their hearts as for ours?
Don’t let an election divide your heart!
If your heart is committed to God, let it be ruled by love. Not politics, or sides, or agendas, or elections. They will come and go, change, and morph. It doesn’t mean we should ignore them or be silent; they are just not preeminent. They do not govern our hearts; our actions and reactions should resemble Jesus, who loved all of God’s creations, even when they didn’t love him back.
Calm your soul. Rest in God.
His eternal plan will not be thwarted.
He loves you despite any election outcome!
Maybe this prayer, written by Henri Nouwen years ago, will encourage you today, as it did me …
A Prayer
Dear God,
I am full of wishes,
Full of desires,
full of expectations.
Some of them may be realized, many may not,
but in the midst of all my satisfactions
and disappointments,
I hope in you.
I know that you will never leave me alone,
and will fulfill your divine promises.
Even when it seems that things are not going my way,
I know that they are going your way
and that in the end your way
is the best way for me.
O Lord, strengthen my hope,
especially when my many wishes are not fulfilled.
Let me never forget that your name is Love.
Amen
HIS name is LOVE!
Our HOPE!
Do not fear, for I am with you … Isaiah 41:10

Elaine, this is by far my favorite column you have written. It could have very easily been published in the Free Lance Star. Well done and well said.

Thank you for this. I, too, have had to check myself with bitten tongue, written words followed by back spacing, prayers waffling between despair and hope. Every thought, every word, every gesture has had to be captured & scrutinized, poured & shaken thru the filter of Jesus ‘ Word. The battle between my spirit and my flesh has been hard fought with intentional & deliberate actions on my part: Are my words spewing hate or love? Am I a minion for Satan or an ambassador for Christ? When I pray for my enemies do I wish them defeat or saving grace thru Jesus?
In this battle of being intentional I have unintentionally surrounded my will to God’s will. That is a glorious victory!
The battle belongs to the Lord!
